This ensemble is not only a meeting of virtuoso players but also a profound friendship born from their shared connection to legendary pianist Joachim Kühn — a figure whose influence shaped their artistic paths. The trio features Coll on electric marimba, piano, and castanets; Mateusz Smoczyński, a renowned Polish violinist and composer bridging jazz and classical; and Ramón López, a Spanish drummer whose global career spans Indian tabla, avant-garde jazz, and collaborations with icons like Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Rashied Ali. Their new sound, „Avant-Groove“, assembles the expressive freedom of the avant-garde with rhythmic foundations drawn from their homelands. From Spain to Poland, the trio channels centuries of tradition into music that is raw, expressive, and unmistakably modern — a new wave in European jazz. How we got together You may be wondering… aren’t the Cosmic Trio’s members the same as the Odyssey, without Majid Bekkas? Yes. And there is a good story about it. It was April 2022, and it was time to make my first concerts as a leader, so I created a local band in Ibiza and organized two concert where we would invite Mateusz Smoczynski as a guest. It was not until two weeks before those concerts that the local band decided to not to play, so I had to find a quick solution. As a gut instinct, I thought about Ramón and Majid, who I had been in touch a few times with through Joachim, and I loved their albums together in trio. I knew someday I wanted to collaborate with them, but now it was more needed than ever, I had to find somebody that could play in a high-level situation and short notice, with Mateusz and me. So I called them instantly and they both instantly liked the idea and agreed to come and play to Ibiza. However, the whirlwind of unexpected events just didn’t stop there. With Ramón and Mateusz already on the island and 4 days before the concert, Majid caught the covid and was not able to travel due to existing restrictions at that time in Morocco. Those were to be my first concerts as a bandleader, so I was a little afraid since we didn’t have a bass, and I was still unexperienced to be able to improvise and make music in an unexpected setting like that, marimba, violin and drums. However, Ramón, with his openness and long-time experienced career in multiple different settings, calmed and motivated me to ride this situation and get the best music possible. We spent 3 days rehearsing together as a trio, working out on what we could do; we had to make a setlist from scratch, and that’s when our music style was created: the castanet-drum duo, the baritone violin playing bass parts, the great violin-drum duos, the looped grooves,.. everything. Both concerts ended up great, and that was the start of my bandleader career, and the birth of an unusual trio that wouldn’t have been created if it was not for the unexpected adversities we had to face. Right now, I couldn’t see a better setting and musicians to fit my music with, and I’m very grateful for the great musical family we’ve created. We’ve been performing ever since, and now, after recording our upcoming album: ‘’Ride to Heaven’’, we cannot wait to bring this music everywhere!
